Phone: (07) 4126 2211 This is unquestionably one of the best displays of military memorabilia outside the Canberra war memorial as is the 'wrap' that has been placed on the collections at Bakers Museum. The collection also includes countless items associated with various emergency services including police, ambulance, and nurses. Phone: (07) 4126 1545 In Taylor Street is the newly established Historical Complex with an impressive sugar cane locomotive imported from England in 1916, a cottage from Isis Central Mill which was once rented out to mill workers for the modest sum of 2 shillings a week, and the old Isis Central Mill School. The Historical Complex is open between 9.00am and 12noon Monday to Friday. The Memorial features cast bronze plaques complete with photographs of those who didn't return home. The room is open from 8.30am to 4.30pm weekdays and is situated beside the Council Chambers in Churchill Street. Admission is free. The Howitzer 210mm Mauser was manufactured in Essen Germany in 1916 by Fried Krupp. The cannon was captured in Flanders by the Australian Imperial Force during World War 1. Childers was only one of two towns in Queensland to receive such a weapon. It was an accolade to the patriotism and loyalty of our young men and in 1922 the cannon was railed to Childers to be used as a lasting memorial to the Great War. Between 1863 and 1904 some 50,000 Kanakas were blackbirded from the Polynesian Islands to labour in the Queensland cane fields. Approximately 14,800 of these were located between Bundaberg and Maryborough. Childers Phone: (07) 4126 3150 Just 7 kilometres north of Childers on the Bruce Highway is the delightfully named rural township of Apple Tree Creek. The lovely big park is an ideal rest stop it is equipped with picnic and barbecue facilities and there is ample parking space for caravans and motorhomes. Whilst in Apple Tree Creek visit Sticky Beaks Café for homemade jams and preserves made from local produce, and check out the purpose-built Swiss-designed wood-fired pizza oven. This is the largest free flight aviary in Australia. Visitors can come and walk with the birds in the free flight aviary. Covering an area of two acres and reaching a height of seven metres, the many varieties of Australian parrots and finches fly free in a natural habitat created especially for them. The area boasts a magnificent long white sand beach with the first surf north of the Sunshine Coast. Prolific numbers of birds including emus, brolgas and jabiru together with kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, possums and reptiles inhabit the national park and surrounding areas. The many walking tracks area a great way to discover the flora and fauna of the Woodgate National Park. Walks range from the 200 metre boardwalk through a tea tree swamp to the 6.2 kilometre Banksia track. There are some facilities for wheelchair access. Camping is also allowed in the park. Access is only by four wheel drive vehicle. Woodgate is a wonderful place for a family holiday with many people returning yearly. Located on the banks of the Burrum River is the small, but growing, community of Buxton. The main attraction for most to Buxton is the fishing and peace and quiet. The riverside park has a barbeque facility and undercover area with an excellent playground for children. Buxton also has a general store, and community hall and boat ramp. Buxton is also serviced by a Volunteer Rural Fire Brigade. Learning to fly is not as difficult or a expensive as you may think. Our goal at Pro-Sky is to provide with a very relaxed environment to do that in, along with the highest level of instruction.
